WARM SCHEME - STYLED2STAY

We renovated a house in South West France. Originally an 18th century farmhouse, which had been converted into a manor house in the late 19th Century, it had fallen into disrepair.

This large room (30ft x 15ft) is on the first floor. The brief was for a lounge in which to entertain.

The choice of red paintwork creates an intimate, convivial atmosphere in an otherwise over-powering space. The brown leather sofas are ageless, and lighting and accessories can be introduced to change the look.

The beautifully - figured chestnut floorboards add textural interest, while the patterned rug pulls together the red and browns of the surroundings. Several large canvases by internationally acclaimed artist Tom Wanless are shown off to advantage against the red walls.

SUNNY DINING KITCHEN

In the same French period house we planned a kitchen. The space was designed to combine a sociable eating area and an area for the preparation and cooking of food.

We decided to have the walls rough plastered and then colour-washed with several shades of yellow acrylic paint. Acid yellow was layered with a warmer mustard hue, which warms up with the changing light, as daytime becomes evening.

The original 18th century terracotta floor tiles inspired the choice of a brick-built breakfast bar topped with rosy polished granite. Sturdy antique wooden furniture, a rise-and-fall pendant lamp, a wood-burning stove and a reclaimed metal wine 'cave' complete the rustic look.
