PORTFOLIO OF DESIGN SOLUTIONS

People often respond differently to the same colour, and according to colour psychology different colours can evoke particular responses.

It stands to reason that avoiding strong colour statements when preparing a home for sale will widen its appeal. This explains why Property Stylists recommend neutralising colour schemes if possible for home staging to sell.

However, when styling a place to live in, an awareness of the psychological effect of colour can help create a harmonious and interesting space. It is not surprising then, that Property Stylist Julie's background is in art & design.

Warm colour Schemes:
We refer to certain colours such as red, orange and yellow as "warm" because they remind us of warm elements like crackling fires and sunshine. Psychologically they make us feel warm.

Cool Colour Schemes:
"Cool" colours such as blue, violet and certain greens remind us of cool trickling water and fresh mint flavours. We feel cooler and calmer with this range of colours.

Naturals and Neutrals:
Naturals are colours found in earth, stone, rocks and grasses. Green lies between the warm and cool ranges and can go either way depending on its components. It is the dominant colour in nature and can be both restful and energising. Used in coordination with other colours from nature (greys, beiges, creams and browns), it creates light, spacious interiors with interest and life.

The often-gloomy British climate makes pure whites look grey, which is why off-whites are a better choice. But staying with a neutral scheme does not limit you to magnolia. Neutrals offer a vast range of choice, and splashes of colour can be added with accessories.
